EVE Online has a reputation for being just Excel with a nicer interface. Of course, this is also fuelled by the fact that the interface is now as dusty as the Excel interface.
CCP is therefore developing a revised interface: ProtonUI. It is supposed to be more modern and more stylish. I’ve been using it permanently for the last few months and now I’m going to tell you what I think.
I belonged more to the older gamer generation. So newer is not always better for me. I have got used to many things and would like to continue to have them.
Nevertheless, I have to say that I actually find the new PhotonUI quite appealing. It looks much more modern and tidy. In addition, CCP is at least bringing some colour back into the game. One thing they had eliminated with the monochrome icons, which I’m not happy about until today.
With today’s update, CCP has made some improvements to the PhotonUI that make me personally very happy. So far, my biggest criticism of the new interface was that everything took up so much space. Modern unfortunately also means: a lot of space consumption. I set the client to 90% despite a resolution of 3440×1440, so I could fit more on my screen. And then the windows all had thick frames.
Some windows already had a Compact Mode, which I also used where possible. Now even more windows have been added. For example, “Selected Items”, which now also scales better with the size and can thus become amazingly compact.

I also noticed that there are new icons. You can see them in the pictures above. But also the standings in the local now have slightly revised icons. I think they are really well done.
But not everything is perfect about the new PhotonUI. There are also still some bugs – although I’m not sure if these are partly caused by the fact that I play on Linux.
For example, the skill window is bugged for me. Firstly, I don’t seem to have access to the Skill Plan Service. Not a big problem for me, I now have over 250 million skill points and hardly ever open the window.
But there is also another problem when opening, as you can see in the picture below. For the first five to ten seconds, there is simply nothing in the upper right-hand corner of the window. Only then does the training queue extend upwards and fill the whole space. Not the end of the world, but still a bug. Maybe I should report it.

Overall, I am satisfied with the PhotonUI and can recommend it to everyone. Try it out, report bugs and if you don’t like it, go back.
What do you think of the new interface?
